Family members inquire about the police response, Officers involved in a tragic shooting in Jersey City have been identified

According to reports, a man in Jersey City was fatally shot by the police after allegedly approaching them with a knife. However, the family of the deceased claims that he was suffering from a mental health crisis at the time of the incident. It is a tragic situation that highlights the importance of mental health awareness and training for law enforcement officers to handle such situations in a more effective and compassionate manner.

Andrew Jerome Washington, aged 52, has been identified as the victim. He was taken to the hospital for surgery, but, unfortunately, he was later pronounced dead.

Lisa Mendez, the aunt of the victim, expressed her disappointment and sadness by saying, “I’m just crushed because we trusted the system. We trusted that they would come and do the right thing.”

Officer Stephen Gigante has been identified by the Attorney General’s Office as the ESU officer who was responsible for shooting Washington.

Police were called to a residence located on Randolph Avenue in proximity to Bramhall Avenue at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Sunday in response to a request made by EMS.

The origin of the call to EMS is uncertain.

According to a preliminary inquiry conducted by the Attorney General’s Office, the Jersey City Police Department made an attempt to establish communication with Washington, but he reportedly declined to open his apartment door. Subsequently, the Jersey City PD requested the assistance of the Jersey City Emergency Services Unit (ESU).

According to the initial investigation, the ESU officers tried to establish contact with Washington for more than 30 minutes by communicating through the shut apartment door.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., an hour after EMS initially arrived at the location, members of the ESU proceeded to forcibly open the door to Washington’s residence.

As per reports, Washington proceeded towards the officers in question.

Upon receiving the threat, ESU Officer Felix DeJesus took immediate action by deploying his stun gun. Meanwhile, Officer Gigante quickly fired his service weapon, hitting Washington twice.

Washington had a history of being shot by police, and this particular incident was not his first. His family revealed that he had been shot in the arm during a previous confrontation with law enforcement 12 years prior.

According to reports, a knife was found by law enforcement officials at the site.

According to Washington’s family, he was going through a tough time with his mental health. They stated that this was due to him not taking his essential medication.

According to his family, they were taken aback when a SWAT team confronted their loved one, who was said to be in a distressed state.

According to Mendez, the situation was tense and unpredictable. Initially, it seemed like authorities were going to retrieve the suspect peacefully. However, things quickly escalated when the SWAT team arrived and ordered bystanders to move back. Mendez described the scene as “real ugly,” and it was clear that the situation had taken a turn for the worse.

The mayor and director of public safety in Jersey City made it clear on Monday that they are committed to transparency in this case. They emphasized their desire to keep the public fully informed throughout the proceedings.

The complete incident was recorded on video through body cameras. The New Jersey attorney general has possession of the footage and is spearheading the investigation.

According to the mayor and public safety director, the video footage they witnessed was consistent with the protocols set forth by the department.

According to Public Safety Director James Shea, the officers immediately contacted emergency services who are trained and equipped to handle individuals in emotional distress.

According to the family, they contacted a crisis centre on Saturday afternoon, which had previously provided treatment to Washington for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia just a few days ago. Their concern was that he was discharged too early.

Mendez shared that their primary fear was not that the individual would harm others but rather that they would harm themselves.

As per the accounts of Washington’s family members, he was not known for being violent. Instead, they mentioned that he was struggling with a severe illness.

Whenever an individual passes away in an altercation with a law enforcement official, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office takes the necessary steps to conduct an investigation.

According to Mendez, there is a dire need for improvement in the way mental patients are handled. The lack of compassion and understanding on the part of law enforcement officials when they shoot someone is a major concern for him. Waiting anxiously outside the premises for hours, only to be told that their family member has been killed, is a harrowing experience that no one should have to go through. Mendez believes that the authorities should treat families with more respect and sensitivity during such difficult times.

According to police, a 5-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl are currently struggling for survival following what has been described as an appalling and pointless act of violence. Janice Yu provides more details on this heartbreaking incident.
