DeKalb County woman arrested after officers discover “multiple injuries” to horse

Authorities say a lady in DeKalb County, Alabama, dragged a horse behind an ATV for about a half-mile this month, leaving the animal with visible injuries. The 39-year-old lady was detained on August 14th and charged with a misdemeanour.

On August 5th, a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Deputy was summoned to a home on County Road 391, according to court filings. Geraldine police were also called. Officers discovered a female horse with apparent damage to its left side, with a preference for the right rear hoof. According to an incident report, there was additional blood on the roadway in front of the property, including one huge patch.

According to a veterinary technician who examined the horse, it had a major portion of both hind hooves missing, injuries to all four feet, and the “back of the foot was worn off past the hairline as the skin and hair was rolled up on the back of the hoof.” According to the technician, those injuries could not have occurred during typical walking or cycling, even on asphalt.

Other injuries included substantial abrasions, as well as bruising on the left shoulder, left front leg, both left and right jaw near the throat, and abrasions underneath the chin on both sides of the head behind the ears, which were “consistent with where a halter would pull on her head.” The horse, dubbed “Whiskey Glasses,” belonged to a woman who arrived on an ATV. She inquired as to how much the horse’s care would cost her.

She reportedly made multiple “confusing and contradictory” claims to investigators, claiming she had not dragged the horse but that it had “road rash” from falling when its legs gave out, and that she had been teaching the horse to ride and leading her with the ATV. According to the incident report, a blood trail around four-tenths of a mile long was traced back to the horse.

The veterinary technician offered to buy the horse on the spot for $200 due to her “reluctance to have the horse treated.” According to records, the woman accepted the offer, and the horse was transferred to Fort Payne.

She was released from the DeKalb County Jail after posting a $3,500 bond.
