BRYANT, Ala. – A 14-year-old Jackson County kid is facing charges after deputies say he was discovered vandalizing Bryant Elementary and North Sand Mountain High School over the weekend. According to Sheriff Rocky Harnen, the teen inflicted thousands of dollars in damage to the schools on three consecutive occasions.
“This kid was tearing pictures off the walls and breaking trophies. Just mean stuff, you know? He broke computers, he broke TV screens with his baseball bat, just mischievous damage,” Harnen said.
The culprit allegedly sprayed obscenity on the school’s walls and smashed several windows. Harnen claims that when deputies apprehended the kid before his third attempt at vandalism, he was carrying a torch and wanted to cause even more damage than previously.
“If he does something else, it will be much worse, and someone may be hurt,” Harnen said.
No one, according to Jackson County Schools Superintendent Jason Davidson, should be treating schools so terribly.
“That’s not something that you want to see anywhere. This is a building that is there for generations to learn, to make their lives better for the community. They’re there to get an education. Anytime you mark or vandalize a building, that just shows the lack of pride,” Davidson says
Davidson urges other students to speak up if they become aware of any such plans.
“If you see something, say something, or overhear someone talking about something, talk to an adult, teacher, or counselor in your building,”
Sheriff Harnen said the young suspect faces felony criminal mischief, burglary, and attempted burglary charges for both schools.
