A security guard was struck by a player during the aftermath of Saturday’s game between Alabama State University and Florida A&M, resulting in the indefinite suspension of the player by the athletics department.
In a SWAC east matchup against the Rattlers, the Hornets unfortunately came up short with a score of 23-10. However, what happened after the game was even more disappointing. A player, identified as Jacob Freeman, who was wearing a No. 16 Alabama State jersey, engaged in a heated argument with the opposing crowd. The altercation escalated when Freeman swung and hit a nearby security guard before being restrained by his teammates.
The team’s online roster no longer includes his name.
Dr. Jason Cable, the Athletic Director of Alabama State University, has released a statement addressing the postgame incident.
As you may already know, there was an incident last night following our game against Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, which involved one of our Alabama State University football student-athletes. We are fully aware of the situation and are currently investigating the matter to gather all the necessary information.
As a statement from the Athletic Department and University, we want to make it clear that we do not support the actions of the student-athlete. It is important to us that our expectations for behavior on and off the field are upheld, and this behavior falls short of those standards.
The football program has taken a strong stance against unacceptable behavior and has implemented a zero-tolerance policy. As a result, the student-athlete involved has been suspended from the team indefinitely, effective immediately.
Get ready for another exciting game at Hornet Stadium next Saturday as the Hornets take on Alcorn State at 5 p.m. It’s sure to be a thrilling kickoff that you won’t want to miss!
