New York taxis and other transportation services that cater to people will now face an additional tax on top of the existing surcharge. This new tax will be imposed on the drivers and will apply to every single trip they make.
In February of 2019, a Congestion surcharge was implemented by the state of New York for specific vehicles during trips that either begin, end, or pass through Manhattan south of 96 Street, excluding the street itself. The initiative was put in place to help reduce traffic congestion in the area.
When you ride in a medallion taxicab, you will be charged an additional $2.50 per trip. It’s important to be aware of this surcharge before you hail a taxi, so you can plan your budget accordingly. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, it’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the fees and charges associated with different modes of transportation in a city. So, remember to keep this in mind when you’re riding in a medallion taxicab.
The cost of a single trip for transportation vehicles that are not medallion taxicabs or pool vehicles is $2.75.
A surcharge of 75 cents is also applicable for each pool trip.
The additional fee is relevant to various modes of transportation, including taxis, green cabs, limousines, black cars, and livery vehicles, commonly referred to as community cars. It also applies to rideshare and transportation network company vehicles, as well as pool vehicles.
Transportation related to funerals is one of the few cases that are exempt from surcharges.
The surcharge exemption extends to various modes of transportation, including buses, ambulances, ambulettes, and Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) transportation.
As the implementation of a new surcharge for congestion pricing looms closer, there have been heated debates surrounding the matter. According to a recent article from The Sun, drivers in a US city have expressed their frustration and anger towards the hidden surcharge that they will be billed for during their visits.
During the month of August, there was a hearing for the Traffic Mobility Board where drivers discussed the possibility of certain individuals paying more than others.
Many truck drivers and cab drivers strongly feel that congestion pricing is unjust towards them.
A taxi driver voiced out his concerns by stating, “They are putting me out of business. Nowadays, people no longer prefer taking the yellow cab.”
The Independent Drivers Guild’s Andrew Greenblatt expressed his dissatisfaction with the proposal of implementing yet another tax.
According to Greenblatt, Uber and Lyft drivers have been subjected to taxation since 2019, and there are talks of implementing an additional tax on them.
The decision to enter the city does not lie with the drivers, it is up to the passengers.
According to reports, commuters traveling to Manhattan’s central business district, south of 61st Street, may soon face an additional fee of $9 to $23 per trip.
According to Carl Weisbroad, who chairs the review board, it is best to maintain a minimal base toll to ensure fairness.
According to Weisbroad, if exemptions are granted, it will ultimately result in increased fares for all passengers.
“If we begin to grant exemptions in certain cases, it creates a situation where people can argue that it is unfair to favor one group (X) over another (Y).”
According to a report by WNBC in August, even though scanners have already been installed along West End Avenue, the congestion pricing plan is not expected to be implemented until the spring of 2024.
