The KC Marching Cobras, a cherished drill team that has been actively involved with the youth of Kansas City’s historic East Side for over 50 years, has announced its disbandment.
After 54 years of success, the founder of the group, Willie Arthur Smith, has decided to retire and officially bring the organization to a close. In a bittersweet moment, he hung up his maroon drillmaster’s top hat as a symbol of the end of an era.
In a press release on Monday, Smith expressed that he believed the timing was right to retire and dissolve. He had been contemplating this decision for several years, but after much reflection and prayer, he decided it was time to move forward and embrace the best years of his life that lie ahead.
Throughout its 54-year existence, the team saw over 10,000 young individuals participate in its activities. As per information provided on the group’s website, the team had the honor of performing for three U.S. presidents, and their talents were showcased in 45 states and even internationally.
According to Meshae Johnson, the granddaughter of the retired individual, after dedicating numerous years to his work, he has decided to retire. The decision was made based on what he believed would be best for him. The team he worked with was a significant part of his legacy, and as he retires, his legacy goes with him.
On Thursday, social media was flooded with posts from fans and ex-members of the Marching Cobras expressing their sadness over the news. Many shared fond memories of parades, performances, and the strong bonds of friendship they formed through the group.
According to a fan’s Facebook post, the KC Marching Cobras have been a beloved institution in KC for as long as they can remember. The high knee march performed by the group was a popular sight, with everyone and their momma joining in.
People cited some of Smith’s most beloved expressions, such as “a winner never gives up, and a quitter never succeeds.”
According to Johnson, there is no truth to the online rumors claiming that Smith is considering ending the team due to personal health problems.
According to her, he is perfectly fine and in good health. There are no issues whatsoever with his well-being, and he is currently at home, taking some much-needed rest.
In 1969, Smith established the Marching Cobras during his tenure as a social studies teacher at Lincoln Junior High School, which is now known as Lincoln College Preparatory Academy Middle School. The school was located in close proximity to the 18th & Vine district, a historic area of Kansas City.
Smith’s talent for choreography was recognized after winning the school’s talent show with a stunning dance performance. Inspired by this success, Smith founded an extracurricular dance group which rapidly gained immense popularity over the next few years. As the group grew, it evolved into a full-fledged drill team incorporating various elements like drumming, tumbling, pom poms, and marching.
