During their loss to Texas on Saturday night, Alabama appeared to be outmatched almost from the beginning until the end. Nick Saban has now openly admitted that he had contemplated making a significant change during the game.
After the Crimson Tide’s defeat with a score of 34-24, Saban faced a question whether he contemplated employing multiple quarterbacks as his offense was struggling. In response, Saban conceded that he did consider making a switch but decided against it after Jalen Milroe’s successful touchdown pass in the late third quarter.
Nick Saban was asked if he considered playing multiple quarterbacks. "I did, but when he put the drive together to go down the field and score … I thought that gave him a lot of confidence"

According to Saban, he did notice the moment when his player successfully drove down the field and scored, which boosted his confidence significantly. Saban believed that this particular play was a turning point for his player’s performance.
It wasn’t until almost three-quarters of the game had passed that Alabama finally managed to cross the goal line. Despite their offensive struggles, the Crimson Tide’s defense held strong and kept them in the game for the entire first half and beyond. But it was when Milroe delivered a 49-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Burton with just 14 seconds left in the third quarter that the tide turned in his favor. That clutch play seemed to have spared him from being benched, and it ultimately helped secure the team’s victory with a score of 16-13.
After falling behind 16-10, Texas came back strong with a touchdown to take a 20-16 lead. Despite throwing an interception on the following drive, which ultimately proved to be a game-changer, Saban kept his faith in Milroe and continued to rely on him to lead the team to victory.
During the offseason, Milroe managed to edge out competitors Ty Simpson and Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner. Although Alabama came out strong and scored an impressive 56 points in their season opener last week, it is important to note that their opponent was Middle Tennessee.
It’s highly unlikely that Saban will continue to keep both of his other quarterbacks on the bench if Milroe struggles against South Florida next week. Saban’s comments about his roster before the season, as reported by Larry Brown Sports, suggest that he may not believe it would make a significant difference to switch up the quarterbacks. It remains to be seen how Saban will handle the situation moving forward.
