Alabama’s back-to-school sales tax holiday begins on Friday

Montgomery, Alabama – The annual back-to-school sales tax holiday in Alabama will be held from Friday, July 21, through Sunday, July 23.

According to the Alabama Retail Association, the annual tax holiday will be held for the seventh time this year during the third weekend of July.

On school supplies and apparel, the state waives its four percent sales tax. In addition, more than 325 cities and counties in Alabama will waive their municipal taxes. Savings of up to 10% are expected in some places. Click here to see a list of this year’s participating cities and counties to see whether your community is included.

Items that are exempt include:

  • Clothing for $100 or less per article
  • School supplies worth no more than $50 per item
  • Books priced at $30 or less per book
  • Tablets, laptops, PCs, and printers priced at $750 or less
