Earlier this year, a man was fatally shot at a public housing complex in Brooklyn. However, the police have made an arrest and believe that they have apprehended the suspect responsible for the crime. Police announced on Sunday that Thomas Nimmons has been charged with murder and weapon possession for the death of Dawuand Darrien on August 12. Nimmons was arrested on Friday in connection with the incident.
According to witnesses, Darrien, who is 29 years old, had a dispute with Nimmons, aged 26, and another man outside the Sumner Houses on Vernon Ave. near Marcus Garvey Blvd. The incident happened around 2:40 a.m.
Amidst the heated argument, gunshots echoed through the lobby of the building. Unfortunately, one of the bullets found its way into Darrien’s chest.
The injured individual was promptly taken to Kings County Hospital by medical personnel, but unfortunately, they were unable to save him.
According to records, Nimmons had been arrested six times before 2017. He was released from prison in April after being incarcerated for nearly four years due to criminal possession of a controlled substance, assault, and attempted robbery charges.
Following an arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court on Saturday, he was held without bail. In the previous month, two different shootings occurred at the Sumner Houses, resulting in six individuals being injured and one losing their life.
According to a report by the Daily News, Kyle Forde, aged 28, was fatally shot in a courtyard at the housing development on September 30. The incident occurred just after he had dropped off his 7-year-old sons with their mother in the vicinity.
Police stated that two of Forde’s acquaintances were also hit by the gunfire, sustaining injuries to their back and stomach. Ryan Nieves, an 18-year-old suspect, was arrested by the police last week for a shooting incident. He is facing charges of murder and attempted murder.
A shooting incident took place on September 6, where a woman and three men were wounded in broad daylight near a basketball court at the complex.
