In Birmingham, a fifth-grader was struck and killed by a vehicle

A vehicle struck and killed a young child Sunday afternoon, according to Birmingham police.

According to Officer Truman Fitzgerald, the incident occurred around 12:15 p.m. on the 3200 block of Jefferson Avenue.

The child’s name was not released by police. Oxmoor Valley Elementary School, on the other hand, recognized him as one of its students.

“It breaks our heart to announce that 5th grade student, Demario Kirkland was hit by a car and sadly lost his life today. Please pray for his family and our school family. Counselors will be on site tomorrow to assist students and staff during this difficult time,” the school stated on its Facebook page.

Walt Wilson, a member of the Birmingham School Board, also wrote on his Facebook page. “I’m asking for your prayers for the family of Damario Kirkland, a 10-year-old Oxmoor Valley Elementary fifth-grader. Please remember to pray for his family, kids, and faculty when they return to school tomorrow,” he said.

The vehicle’s driver remained at the site.

The incident is being investigated by police.
