Barrage of gunfire in Birmingham neighborhood leaves 1 dead

On Thursday night, a young man was fatally shot in a northern Birmingham neighbourhood.

The victim was identified as 18-year-old Adrien Harris, a Birmingham resident.

At approximately 9 p.m., officers from the North Precinct were called to the 3100 block of 33rd Place North after receiving reports of gunshots.

Upon arrival, the officers discovered multiple shell casings on the ground, but no victim was found. Shortly after, Harris arrived at UAB Hospital in a private vehicle driven by an unknown individual.

Unfortunately, Harris was pronounced dead at the hospital just over an hour later. According to Officer Truman Fitzgerald, investigators believe that Harris was targeted due to the amount of shell casings found at the scene and the secluded location of the incident.

Fitzgerald added that there may have been multiple shooters involved, and the investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made yet, and Harris’ death marks the fifth homicide in Birmingham in the past six days after a two-week period without any homicides.

As of now, there have been 84 homicides in Birmingham this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting, and seven others were deemed justifiable and therefore not criminal.

In Jefferson County, there have been 117 homicides, including 84 in Birmingham. Anyone with information is urged to contact homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
