Wednesday, D.C. police released body camera footage depicting the events leading up to the fatal shooting of a man on N. Capitol Street who was the subject of a mental health intervention last week.
Additionally, the deceased individual was identified by the police as Clifford Brooks of Northeast D.C. His age was 41 years old. The response to a dispatch regarding a mental health crisis in the 2500 block of Benning Road NE commenced on January 24 at approximately 6:45 a.m.
Chief Pamela Smith stated that a trained crisis intervention officer was among those who responded and engaged Brooks in conversation “for nearly two hours.”
Brooks was being transported to a hospital by ambulance for treatment by first responders, with the crisis officer following in a cruiser. Brooks allegedly became agitated and assaulted a female firefighter/paramedic who was traveling alone with him in the ambulance, according to authorities. At the time, Brooks was neither in custody nor restrained.
