D.C. Resident Accused Of Carjacking Off-Duty Police Officer In Prince George’s County

Mocobizscene-Prince George’s County police announced on Friday that they have successfully apprehended a man who was accused of carjacking an off-duty police officer in Oxon Hill.

19-year-old Anthony Stewart, hailing from the District, has been taken into custody by the Metropolitan Police. This arrest comes in relation to the carjacking incident that occurred near the Tanger Outlets National Harbor shopping center on Thursday.

In the incident that took place on Thursday evening around 5 p.m., Mr. Stewart, along with an unidentified male suspect, allegedly compelled an off-duty Prince George’s County police officer and his family members to exit their vehicle. This incident occurred in the 6700 block of Tanger Boulevard, as reported by the police.

The off-duty officer took immediate action, drawing his firearm from its holster and firing at the two suspects.

Fortunately, there were no casualties resulting from the shooting incident. The suspects managed to escape the scene in the officer’s own vehicle.

Mr. Stewart is currently held in custody in the District as he awaits extradition to Prince George’s County. The charges against him include carjacking, robbery, theft, and other criminal offenses. In 2023, the number of carjackings in Prince George’s County has risen by 18% compared to the previous year, according to police data. A total of 501 carjackings were reported in the county.
