Following smuggling attempt arrests by the Alabama Department of Corrections and the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, two persons are currently housed in the Elmore County Jail. The arrests of Sarah Woodward, 32, of Prattville, and Antonio Crumpton, 34, of Montgomery occurred more than a year apart.
The Elmore County Sheriff’s Office had to wait 14 months to apprehend Crumpton following his purported effort in August 2022 to smuggle cocaine into state prisons. The 34-year-old Montgomery resident escaped from authorities more than a year ago when they tried to arrest him close to the state prisons.
“A traffic stop attempt was made by patrol while they were in the area,” Capt. Ric Brouillard of the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office stated. “The vehicle would not stop. He was pursued to Montgomery.
Crumpton became a suspect after investigators discovered evidence both during and after the chase. About 14 months after the case began, on Tuesday night, he was taken into custody. According to Brouillard, Crumpton’s attempt was comparable to past jail smuggling operations that the agency has foiled since they included substantial quantities of drugs and contraband bundled together.
As Brouillard said, “They’ll package everything and carry it in a backpack.”
