Sylvester Demetrius Selby’s family has initiated legal proceedings against Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie and the deputy responsible, Edward Glaser III, in relation to the fatal shooting of Selby. The complaint was submitted to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina on December 7.
The named defendants are the subject of a federal constitutional claim, as well as charges of wrongful death, battery, and assault. According to the initial information pertaining to the case, Selby brandished a knife towards law enforcement personnel.
Members of Selby’s family, who were granted private access to the body camera footage of the incident, assert that the fatality of the 44-year-old Manteo man was an unjust homicide committed amidst a manic episode. According to statements made by Selby’s family, he struggled with mental health issues and diabetes and thyroid disorders following the recent losses of family members.
The lawsuit asserts that “Deputy Glaser fatally shot Mr. Selby at a time when he presented no danger to law enforcement, others, or himself.” Furthermore, the narration incorporates an additional detail regarding the event: Selby reportedly sustained a puncture wound to the heart during the occurrence.
According to the account, Glaser, who was demanding that Selby cease his motion, subsequently discharged two more shots at him while he was supine, resulting in his untimely demise. Regarding the litigation, the Dare County Sheriff’s Department did not provide a prompt response to a request for comment.
