Virginia Man Convicted of Killing Mother After Indian Head Breakfast Fight

Bandon Kiah Slade, 29, a resident of Norfolk, was convicted of murder, assault, and other offenses subsequent to a three-day trial in relation to the demise of his mother, Lenora Coates-Slade. Three years ago, Slade’s remains were discovered in the family garage, where she had been fatally stabbed with a plastic bag wrapped around her head.

Prosecutors declared on Friday that a magistrate had imposed a life sentence on him in connection with the homicide of his mother.

In October 2020, in response to a “report of unknown trouble,” officers were dispatched to a residence in Indian skull, where they discovered Coates-Slade in critical condition with multiple stab wounds and a plastic bag encircling her skull in her garage.

Prosecutors claim that first responders established communication with a family member residing at the residence who was absent at the time but expressed concern over her inability to reach Coates-Slade.

Slade promptly returned the family member’s call to the woman’s phone, informing her that his mother was sound unconscious; this prompted the family member to request a welfare check.

Authorities report that on October 14, 2020, Slade spent the night at his mother’s residence. The following morning, during breakfast, an altercation ensued between the two individuals.

Prosecutors claimed that he began to assault her in the kitchen during the argument; however, she managed to escape outside and began to shriek before Slade could re-establish contact.

Police were provided with surveillance footage from outside the residence in which Slade was observed forcibly restraining his mother, who was visibly stained with blood on her blouse, as she attempted to elude his grasp.

He was subsequently apprehended as he choked Coates-Slade to apparent unconsciousness prior to dragging her into the residence. Slade emerged shortly thereafter to clean the blood from his mother’s remains from the front veranda steps.

Prior to imposing a life sentence on Slade, the judge described the crime as “brutal, malicious, and vile murder.” “The victim was looking out for you and trusted you; you were practically defenseless during this,” he continued.

Prosecutors were informed by a family member that Slade had harmed his mother prior to the homicide.

“The term’senseless’ barely begins to describe this,'” stated the prosecuting attorneys. “We shall never forget the behavior in which Slade was involved.” She proceeded. “[Slade] exhibits neither accountability nor remorse.” The family that you repeatedly heard from today pleaded with the defendant to seek assistance.

Slade received a conviction for:

First-degree murder; assault in the first and second degrees; intent to cause bodily harm while wearing and carrying a hazardous weapon.
