Belnavis was apprehended by US Marshalls in the vicinity of the San Diego Zoo on Monday, March 11. Authorities charged him with armed assault to murder and carrying a gun without a license. It is anticipated that his charges will be elevated to murder upon his extradition to Massachusetts.
Mangual faced arrest the day following the tragic shooting and was charged with murder, among other offenses. He firmly declared his innocence to all charges, as stated by the prosecutor.
Mangual remains in custody without bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on April 12.
The motive for the killing has not been disclosed by the police.
