Woman from St. Louis Faces Charges in Killing of Repo Man

A St. Louis woman is charged with felony murder after attempting to rob the individual who had repossessed her Jeep. Unfortunately, the robbery took a tragic turn and did not go as planned.

On September 7, Jesse Jones, a 44-year-old owner of a tow truck company, made an attempt to repossess Cortrina Donaby’s Jeep Grand Cherokee in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood of St. Louis. However, Dwayne Davis, a 27-year-old individual, confronted Jones and made a move to intercept the Jeep, as reported by the police.

The police were able to locate the vehicle at that location due to a tracking device that had been installed by the dealer. This led to a pursuit, during which Davis crashed the Jeep on the Poplar Street Bridge. Witnesses observed him discarding a firearm into the river.

Two days later, he faced charges of murder and robbery, along with several others.

A photograph captured by Robert Cohen of the Post-Dispatch drew significant public interest as it depicted the lifeless body of Jones, adorned with bear-claw furry slippers.

“He was fortunate to have been wearing shoes!” Stephanie, Jones’ sister, shared with the Post-Dispatch. “He had a fondness for being playful and expressive. He enjoyed donning overalls with no shirt and had a penchant for tie-dye shirts. That was his unique style.”

Donaby, the owner of the Jeep, is now confronted with robbery and armed criminal action charges, along with the felony murder charge, almost three months after the incident. Felony murder is a charge that prosecutors bring against individuals whose involvement in a lesser criminal act results in someone’s death.

According to the police, Donaby, who is 30 years old, reached out to Davis regarding the repossession of her car. The car was obtained through a short-term rental from a nearby dealership. Both Davis and Donaby collaborated to intercept the car as it was being repossessed. During the investigation, Davis informed the detectives about Donaby’s involvement in the murder of Jones.

Donaby is not currently in police custody. According to Detective Andre Washington’s police probable cause statement, she has fled Missouri after the killing of Jones. A warrant has been issued for her arrest.
