Mocobizscene- The Florida Department of Children and Families stepped in when police officers discovered a young Slovakian girl unaccompanied in South Beach. According to records, the girl’s mother, who was reportedly on vacation with her boyfriend, was arrested.
According to the Miami Beach Police Department, a 42-year-old woman and her 6-year-old daughter, who are from Martin, a European city in northern Slovakia, were supposed to fly back home on Jan. 14.
At around 2:40 p.m. on Friday, police officers discovered the young girl at the South Bay Club on West Avenue and Eighth Street. She was shivering from the cold, her clothes soaked from being wet.
According to police, the building manager reported that a worker expressed concern for the girl’s safety upon discovering her alone in the pool, which overlooks Biscayne Bay.
The police officers requested an interpreter and questioned both the girl and her mother, Michaela Novakova, when they returned at around 5:50 p.m., as the girl only spoke Slovak.
Police officers arrested Novakova at approximately 6:40 p.m. The arrest report stated that she had abandoned her daughter earlier that afternoon without providing adequate food, shelter, supervision, or medical care.
Novakova was booked by correctional officers from Miami-Dade County at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center shortly after midnight on Saturday. According to records, she appeared in court on Monday, where she faced a charge of child neglect with no great bodily harm.
The girl’s father was in Slovakia, and according to police officers, since she didn’t have any family in Miami-Dade County, they informed the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and detectives from the special victims unit.
