Wisconsin apartment rooftop party leads to shooting, injuring at least 10 people

According to authorities, a rooftop party in Wisconsin’s capital city turned violent early Sunday, leaving 10 people injured by gunfire.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel , The Lux apartments, a high-rise building located in downtown Madison near the University of Wisconsin campus, was the site of the shooting.

During a press conference, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes expressed his relief that no fatalities occurred, remarking, “It is truly a miracle that no one is dead.” He also shared that the community is deeply saddened by the events.

During the incident, nine individuals sustained gunshot wounds or grazes, while another individual was injured by broken glass, Barnes informed the press. The Journal Sentinel reported that five of them were taken to nearby hospitals, while others sought medical care at hospitals in the vicinity during the night.

According to WISC-TV, Barnes reported that the victims’ ages varied between 14 and 23 years old. The Journal Sentinel stated that none of the injuries were life-threatening.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, a call about a disturbance at a party on the rooftop of the apartment complex was received at approximately 12:45 a.m. CDT, prompting officers to respond.

According to the newspaper, officers were met with gunfire as they responded to the situation.

As of Sunday evening, the State Journal reported that no arrests had been made. According to officers, there were several hundred people on the roof when the shooting occurred, and it remains unclear how many shooters were involved.

According to a report by WISC, there is still one victim who remains hospitalized, and their current condition is unknown.

According to Abel Abaya, a resident at The Lux, he was on his way to his apartment last night when he heard six or seven gunshots at around eight. He mentioned that the incident happened on the rooftop, and the victims managed to go down through the emergency stairs before falling onto the street.

According to the State Journal, The Lux was constructed in 2016 with the aim of luring in young professionals. However, in 2020, the building was acquired by an international student housing firm, and now a majority of its occupants are college students.

During a press briefing, Barnes expressed that the students ought to have been enjoying their summer break instead of undergoing medical treatment.

The authorities are still conducting an investigation.
