Mocobizscene-A unique jazz club in Williamsburg, owned by a Black entrepreneur, has been delighting the community for over four decades with its distinct music. Gary Eastman, the proud owner of the Williamsburg Music Center located on Bedford Avenue, shares with News 12 that he personally constructed this establishment from scratch, resulting in a one-of-a-kind space like no other.
According to Eastman, this place has a rich history of hosting some of the most renowned Black artists in the world. He believes that visitors can witness the finest talents in this establishment.
Visitors can explore the building that has been developed over the past forty years and discover a unique performance space filled with rhythm, jazz, and a rich history. In the 1970s, Eastman arrived in Brooklyn from upstate New York with a noble goal in mind: to establish a nonprofit organization dedicated to nurturing the potential of young Black individuals.
When you enter WMC, you leave behind the bustling sounds of the city and find yourself in a musical oasis. Eastman proudly describes his establishment as a complete television recording studio. According to Eastman, he provides a convenient space for young artists to perform without the hassle of bringing their amplifiers, drums, pianos, and other equipment to gigs.
As an artist and a Black man, Eastman finds it rewarding to be able to claim ownership of this space, from setting up the stage to laying the floor.
