Mocobizscene- Helping the homeless population in Virginia Beach can be significantly facilitated by assisting the city in accurately estimating their numbers to ensure they receive adequate funding.
Virginia Beach Housing & Neighborhood Preservation is looking for volunteers to help with its annual point-in-time, or PIT, count on Thursday, Jan 25 from 3:30-7 a.m. Volunteers will be part of a team consisting of staff and other volunteers. They will be assigned a specific area where they will locate individuals living without shelter, conduct a survey, and provide necessary resources.
The count gives us an overview of the number of people who were provided with shelter and those without shelter on a single day in January. It plays a crucial role in determining how much funding a community will receive for homeless programs and services. As stated in a release, Virginia Beach agencies that offer housing and supportive services to the homeless receive approximately $2 million in grants each year.
The demographic information and other data gathered during the PIT Count have the potential to uncover the extent of homelessness, identify trends, and reveal opportunities for addressing the needs of the population.
To become a volunteer, individuals must be at least 18 years old and are required to participate in mandatory training sessions.
