Virginia Ranks Second in States with Highest Percentages of Fatal Crashes Involving Police Pursuits: Study
A recent study conducted by H&P Law reveals that Virginia is ranked second among states with the highest percentages of fatal crashes involving police pursuits. This finding highlights the concerning issue of road safety and the need for further examination of police pursuit protocols.
According to analysts from H&P, an examination of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed that Georgia holds the top spot in fatal and non-fatal crashes related to police pursuits between 2017 and 2021. Remarkably, 2.09% of all fatal crashes in Georgia were a result of police pursuits.
Virginia ranked second in terms of fatal crashes involving police pursuits, accounting for 2.03% of all such incidents in the state. Out of the total 4,037 deadly crashes reported, 82 of them were associated with police pursuits.
According to a statement from H&P Law spokesperson, crashes that occur during police pursuits are often a result of factors such as high speeds, reckless driving, and traffic conditions, especially in densely populated areas. The danger is further heightened by challenges in communication between law enforcement agencies, distractions, vehicle malfunctions, and adverse weather conditions.
