Mocobizscene- The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office has announced that the two individuals who were apprehended the day after Christmas for possessing handguns with machine gun conversion devices inside a shopping mall have now been officially charged.
Two teenagers are facing multiple charges after being arrested by law enforcement. Zachery Hunter, 18, is charged with possession of a machine gun, obstruction of justice, resisting law enforcement, and possession of marijuana. Octavioius Reid, 19, is facing charges of possession of a machine gun, escape, obstruction of justice, and resisting law enforcement.
Officers responded to a report of potentially armed suspects inside Von Maur, a clothing store located in Castleton Square Mall, on December 26. The mall is situated on the northeast side of the city, between I-465 and I-69.
The suspects were approached by officers, but they quickly fled on foot into the parking lot. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reports that Reid was apprehended in the parking lot, while Hunter was found hiding inside a restroom at a nearby restaurant and was also taken into custody.
During the investigation, law enforcement officers discovered a firearm inside the mall that they believed had been dropped by Reid. Additionally, they found a second firearm inside a trashcan located in the restroom, where Hunter was apprehended.
According to court documents, both guns were equipped with Glock switches, which are small devices that attach to the rear of a handgun and convert it into a semi-automatic weapon. It was reported that these switches had been stolen.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears emphasized the importance of Glock Switch legislation, stating that it provides prosecutors and law enforcement with the necessary tools to hold individuals accountable for possessing machine guns. He further expressed concern over the concerning trend of young people gaining access to these highly dangerous devices and reassured the public that his office is dedicated to prosecuting such cases with utmost diligence.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office filed a total of 111 cases in 2023, all related to the possession of a machine gun.
