Trump once supported executing Yusef Salaam, who now serves on the NYC Council

Yusef Salaam, who was once the subject of a call for execution by Donald Trump, is now set to become a member of the New York City Council.

Salaam, a member of the “Central Park Five” who was wrongly accused of a 1989 assault on a jogger, has been elected without any opposition. He had already secured a Democratic primary earlier this year with ease.

During an interview with the Associated Press, Salaam stated that he sees himself as the ambassador for everyone’s pain. He believes that his own experience has prepared him to lead others through their own struggles. “In many ways, I went through that for our people so I can now lead them,” he said. Five men, including Salaam, who were Black and Latino, were wrongly imprisoned for the rape and assault of a white jogger in Central Park in 1989.

The national focus was drawn towards the attack, which even caught the attention of Trump. As a real estate mogul based in New York, Trump once placed a newspaper advertisement urging the state to reinstate the death penalty. The exoneration of Salaam and his co-defendants was made possible by the use of DNA evidence.

Yusef Salaam, who was once called for execution by Donald Trump, has been elected to the New York City Council. As originally reported, Salaam’s journey from wrongful conviction to political office is a testament to his perseverance and the power of second chances. Despite the injustice he faced, Salaam has devoted his life to advocating for criminal justice reform and racial equality, and his election to the City Council marks a significant milestone in his ongoing fight for justice.
