Democratic representative Bennie Thompson has terminated the employment of one of his staff members who reportedly posted a message on social media saying “Don’t miss next time” in response to the assassination attempt against Donald Trump.
According to local reports, Jacqueline Marsaw, the case worker and field office manager at Thompson’s Natchez office, has resigned from her position following the circulation of her controversial social media post.
After the campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday night, where the former president was wounded, a spectator killed, and others injured, a staff member reportedly made comments on her personal Facebook page. The comments read, “While I don’t support violence, it wouldn’t hurt to have better shooting skills. So you don’t miss the next time. Oops, did I say that out loud?”
After capturing the posts, staff members at the Mississippi GOP shared them on X and demanded Thompson to terminate the employee and step down from his position. However, the posts have since been removed.
“I have been informed about a post that was made by one of my staff members who is no longer employed by me,” stated the Mississippi congressman, who oversaw the January 6 committee hearings, in a statement to Fox News. Although the staff member’s name was not revealed.
In an interview with the Natchez Democrat on Saturday evening, Marsaw explained that she was caught up in the moment and became overwhelmed. She also made it clear that she is a staunch supporter of the Democratic party. Marsaw emphasized that her post was meant to be humorous and not taken seriously.
On Sunday, Secret Service agents contacted Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten, requesting his assistance in finding Marsaw. Patten confirmed the call with the outlet.
According to the sheriff, Marsaw cooperated fully with the federal agents during the investigation. The case will now be handed over to the Attorney General and forwarded to Washington D.C. to decide whether charges will be pursued.
According to Patten, when questioned about whether Marsaw had any malicious intentions towards Trump, he responded, “I don’t think so. Those who are familiar with Jackie know that she is very enthusiastic about her work and can become emotional at times. This can sometimes lead to outbursts, as was the case when she posted on social media.”
According to him, during the 45-minute interview, the woman expressed deep remorse and repeatedly apologized for her unwarranted and uncalled for actions.
On X, Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House, expressed his opinion on the matter, stating that Marsaw should be dismissed. He further added, “The poison runs deep with staff like Thompson, who proposed the resolution to terminate secret service protection for President Trump.”
Critics have also targeted Thompson for a bill he brought forth earlier this year concerning the safeguarding of the secret service. This came after the assassination attempt.
In April, the former two-time chair of the House committee on homeland security, aged 76, proposed a bill that would terminate Secret Service protection for felons who have been sentenced to prison. It’s worth noting that this happened before Trump, the first former US president to be convicted in the hush money trial, was found guilty.
In the wake of the assassination attempt, Donald Trump Jr, the former president’s eldest son, made a post on X, referring to the incident. He emphasized that if @BennieGThompson and the Democrats had their way, his father would not have survived. He urged people to remember this fact and not let it be forgotten.
On X, Marjorie Taylor Greene, a congresswoman from Georgia, claimed that a bill was introduced by House Democrats, headed by Bennie Thompson, to remove the USSS protection from President Trump.
In her statement, she asserted that the Department of Justice, which she referred to as “weaponized,” has made every effort to ensure that President Trump is imprisoned for the remainder of his life. She also mentioned the imprisonment of non-violent J6ers for years, while expressing her belief that the DOJ desires the death of President Trump and his supporters. According to her, this is something that will not be forgotten.
Thompson responded to the assassination attempt and stated, “Political violence has no place in American democracy.” He expressed gratitude towards the swift response of law enforcement regarding the incident.
“My heart goes out to everyone involved, and I am relieved to know that the former President is safe,” expresses sincere concern and relief.
In an interview with The New York Post, Trump shared that he feels grateful to be alive after being wounded in the shooting incident that occurred during his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday night. The experience was surreal for him, and he acknowledged that he was supposed to be dead.
During his campaign speech, Thomas Matthew Crooks, a gunman, began firing at the former president from the rooftop of a building located just outside of the rally’s security perimeter.
During the incident, a bullet hit Trump in the ear and unfortunately, former fire chief Corey Comperatore, aged 50, lost his life due to the barrage of bullets. Additionally, two other attendees sustained injuries and were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.
The gunman was shot and killed by Secret Service agents who retaliated with gunfire.
We attempted to contact Thompson’s Washington D.C. office for comment on the matter but have yet to receive a response.
