At 1:22 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, the iconic Tiger Woods stood on the 18th fairway of Augusta National, clad in his signature red attire, ready to unleash his final tee shot of the 2024 Masters tournament.
Arriving over five hours ahead of schedule, he found himself waiting anxiously for the final-round leaders to begin their tee off in an hour.
After struggling with his game and shooting an 82 on Saturday, which was his worst round ever in a major tournament, Woods made a comeback on Sunday. He finished in dead last, securing 60th place with a 5-over 77. This performance left him at 16-over par.
Tiger Woods, aged 48, hardly plays competitively these days following his car crash in 2021 that severely injured his right leg. According to Woods, the most difficult aspect of the weekend was the strong wind, which greatly affected shots throughout the tournament.
In reflecting on the challenging conditions of the golf course, the player expressed his thoughts on the impact of the wind on the shots and putting. He acknowledged the difficulty of staying in position due to the course’s layout. Regrettably, he found himself out of position numerous times during the previous day and a few times during the current round.
However, Woods reassured that there was still hope.
“It was a great week,” he exclaimed. “All in all, it was a fantastic week. I believe that stepping into this event after a lengthy break from playing a full tournament was quite a challenge, but I managed to put up a good fight on Thursday and Friday.”
“I’m disappointed that yesterday didn’t go as planned. Today, Tom Kim’s impressive performance with a 6-under 66 reminded me of the round I believed I had within me. However, I couldn’t replicate it on the course.”
Tiger Woods has revealed his plans to participate in the remaining three men’s majors this season. His journey is set to kick off with the PGA Championship at Valhalla in May, followed by the U.S. Open at Pinehurst in June.
When asked about Augusta National, he expressed familiarity with the golf course, stating, “This is a golf course I knew going into it.” He further shared his intention to conduct thorough research on Pinehurst, Valhalla, and Troon for future tournaments, particularly the British Open. This approach forms his game plan moving forward.
Coming back here is always a pleasant experience for me because I am familiar with the golf course and know how to navigate it. I can mentally visualize and simulate shots in my mind. Of course, it’s never quite the same as actually being out here and executing those shots in reality. Similarly, I’ve been informed that there have been some changes made at the upcoming golf sites. Therefore, I plan to arrive early and personally inspect them to familiarize myself with the new layout.
After enduring a miserable weekend, Tiger Woods decided to adopt a forward-thinking approach and focus on the future.
After his disappointing performance at the Masters, Tiger Woods is already setting his sights on the three remaining majors.
