Mocobizscene- According to authorities, a bicyclist was targeted by a group of armed thieves in broad daylight in Northwest D.C., who proceeded to steal their Canada Goose jacket.
On Tuesday, December 12, surveillance footage captured the unsettling incident where a cyclist’s path on Belt Street NW was blocked by a car. Startlingly, three individuals swiftly emerged from the vehicle, with one of them brandishing a firearm. Within mere moments, they successfully absconded with the cyclist’s prized Canada Goose jacket before making a hasty getaway in their car.
The D.C. police are currently on the lookout for a white 2013 Hyundai Sonata with Maryland license plates.
The theft during the day shocked a parent whose children go to a preschool in the area.
Jeremy Harrell expressed concern about the increasing boldness of criminals in his neighborhood. He emphasized that this boldness is evident regardless of the location or time of day. Harrell’s comment came in response to an incident that occurred at 3:45 in the afternoon, highlighting how criminals are becoming more brazen in their actions.
Thieves have been specifically targeting individuals who are donning luxurious winter coats valued at over $1,000 each since the previous winter season.
Over the course of 48 hours in late November, authorities reported a series of incidents involving expensive coats in Northwest, which included three robberies and one attempted robbery.
In a recent incident, a couple visiting D.C. from out of state fell victim to thieves who stole their jackets while they were walking around Dupont Circle earlier this year.
During the months of January and early February, there were reports from the police regarding a series of theft incidents specifically aimed at students from Howard University and George Washington University. The main target of these thefts were students who owned jackets.
According to data from the Metropolitan Police Department, robberies in D.C. have increased by 68% compared to this time last year.
Canada Goose coats are available at a wide range of prices, starting from over $1,000 to nearly $1,800. The D.C. police have reasons to believe that a portion of the stolen coats are being resold on the internet.
