Sheriff of New Jersey commits suicide at restaurant amid department turmoil

Mocobizscene-  According to local media accounts, a sheriff from New Jersey committed himself on Tuesday night after shooting himself inside a Turkish restaurant in the city of Clifton.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik allegedly went into the Toros restroom. Soon later, a gunshot was heard by restaurant patrons, according to a report published in the Bergen Record. As soon as they got to the site, police closed off a number of the nearby streets, including the restaurant.

Retired Clifton police officer Berdnik has served as the sheriff of Passaic County, a suburb of the New York metro area, since 2011. In November 2022, he was re-elected to the role.

Berdnik passed away less than a week after, according to the Bergen Record, the FBI detained two sergeants and a sheriff’s deputy for allegedly beating a prisoner at the Passaic County Jail in 2021 as payback for the man dousing a jail guard in urine.

Berdnik also said on Thursday that 29 sheriff’s officers would lose their jobs as a result of the closing of the Passaic County Jail.
