According to officials, a school bus in North Carolina overturned on Tuesday morning, resulting in one person being airlifted to a hospital. Additionally, ten individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the incident.
According to USA TODAY, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol has reported that the incident took place at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The driver of the Burke County school bus lost control, veered off the right side of the road, collided with a ditch, and ultimately overturned. The bus finally came to a stop on its top.
At the time of the crash, there were nine children and two adults on the bus.
An adult on the bus was partially trapped and had to be rescued by a medical helicopter. They were then taken to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte in serious condition.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP), the driver and the nine children were transported to different local hospitals. Fortunately, all the injuries sustained by the children were not life-threatening. The driver also suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
The bus driver, who is 51 years old, was issued a citation by the police for not maintaining lane control.
The bus serves as a means of transportation for individuals with disabilities and caters to various schools within the Burke County District. USA TODAY’s request for comment and additional information from Burke County Public Schools has not yet been responded to.
The school district informed local outlets that a minimum of five students were released after receiving evaluation or treatment for their injuries.
“We are thankful that, aside from a few bumps and bruises, the students involved in this morning’s bus incident are recovering well,” stated Mike Swan, the superintendent of Burke County Public Schools, in a message to WBTV. “As they heal both physically and emotionally, we will continue to offer them our support. We are also relieved to hear that the bus driver’s injuries seem to be minor. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the bus monitor and her family.”
