According to court records, detectives allege that the man shot by Long Beach police in October was wanted for attempting to kill a witness in a gang murder case. The motive behind the attack was to prevent the witness from testifying against him.
Long Beach police recently disclosed information regarding the incident where a detective shot and injured Oscar Alejandro Ramires. The confrontation occurred when Ramires reportedly crashed his car into the detective’s vehicle in an effort to evade capture. However, the department has remained tight-lipped about the reasons behind their pursuit of Ramires and the events that unfolded leading up to the confrontation at a Montebello gas station on October 31.
According to court documents, which include a comprehensive search warrant obtained by the Long Beach Post, it is revealed that Ramires was being sought after for his involvement in a series of crimes. One of the most significant charges against him was the attempted murder of a woman. This woman was believed to have betrayed his gang and was suspected of preparing to testify against one of its members.
The woman who witnessed the incident, as mentioned in court records, is currently under protective custody. To safeguard her identity, the Long Beach Post refrains from disclosing her name or providing specific details about the incident.
The LBPD’s investigation into Ramires reveals that the woman he allegedly attempted to kill was initially apprehended as a suspect in a gang-related murder case. However, after she cooperated with prosecutors and provided a statement against one of her co-defendants, the charges against her were dismissed. Consequently, she was expected to serve as a witness in the case.
According to the police, Ramires’ gang was not pleased with this news.
According to the search warrant, the homicide detectives believe that the North Side Longo gang had targeted her for violence in order to prevent her from testifying. They based this belief on several recorded jail calls, prison calls, and social media posts.
Records state that Ramires relentlessly maintained pressure on the individual, going so far as to visit her residence and insist on seeing her. According to the warrant, one witness warned Longo to stay away from the north, possibly cautioning her about gang territory. According to police, Ramires persisted with his intimidation tactics, as he allegedly reposted what seemed to be a bounty on Facebook.
In the warrant, the police mentioned that the bounty included a photograph, address, and phone number of the victim. The listed price for her capture was $5,000. According to the warrant, police also determined that Ramires was a suspect in two separate car-to-car shootings in October.
On October 31st, the police documented a significant event involving Ramires. According to their report, Ramires, who resided in Montebello at the time, decided to drive to a nearby gas station and exited his vehicle. According to the police’s account of events and the surveillance footage they released, the individual noticed a clearly marked LBPD squad car and promptly returned to his own vehicle.
According to the LBPD, Ramires, despite being wounded, managed to drive for a short distance before crashing at a nearby intersection and fleeing the scene. As the police pursued him, Ramires allegedly sought refuge in the garage of an apartment complex. There, officers apprehended him and took him into custody. Following his capture, he was swiftly transported to the hospital.
The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office has charged Ramires with several serious offenses. These charges include attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, dissuading a witness by force or fear, assault with a deadly weapon, and assault upon a peace officer.
According to court records, Ramires entered a plea of not guilty during his arraignment on November 2. His attorney, when approached for comment, declined to provide any further information.
Ramires has a hearing scheduled for December 19th when he will be back in court. In the meantime, inmate records indicate that he is currently detained with a bail set at $2.27 million. The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) stated in court documents that the man who was shot by police was attempting to kill a witness in a gang murder case. This information was revealed in a recent court filing.
