According to a spokesperson from the county’s fire and rescue squad, they were sent to the river after receiving reports of a kayak going over the Maryland Falls at 6:20 p.m.
One kayaker managed to free themselves on the Virginia side. Fairfax Fire treated and released them. Another kayaker had to be rescued by the Park Police helicopter using a stokes basket and was airlifted to a hospital for medical attention, according to officials.
The hydraulic current has trapped their red kayak, making it impossible to retrieve.
