Republicans demand Biden’s testimony at April impeachment hearing while White House criticizes investigation

House Oversight Committee Chairman, James Comer, extended a formal invitation to President Joe Biden to testify before the panel. This invitation comes in the context of a Republican-led impeachment inquiry focused on allegations that Biden leveraged his position to engage in and benefit from his family’s international business ventures. It is important to note that Biden vehemently denies these allegations.

The Committee has suggested April 16 as the date for the hearing, as stated in a letter from Comer. He expressed his belief that the White House has adopted an unfriendly stance towards the Committee’s investigation.

The impeachment investigation, initially initiated by former Speaker Kevin McCarthy and later formalized by the House in a party-line vote, has not yet produced any concrete evidence against the president.

In his statement on Thursday, Comer argued that there exists a significant disparity between what Biden has publicly stated and the committee’s actual progress.

Chairman Comer, in his capacity as the Committee Chairman, not only expects you to respond to the queries presented in this letter but also extends an invitation for you to partake in a public hearing. This hearing will provide you with an opportunity to elucidate, under oath, your association with your family’s income sources and the methods employed to generate it.

According to Speaker Mike Johnson, there are certain unanswered questions that have surfaced from the inquiry, which the President has the ability to address. Johnson emphasized the importance of obtaining the President’s input on these matters.

At the conclusion of the latest impeachment hearing, the oversight chairman, a Republican from Kentucky, expressed his intention to request Biden’s testimony.

During the hearing held earlier this month, House Republicans brought forward well-established allegations of impropriety within the Biden family. Meanwhile, Democrats attempted to portray the investigation as a politically motivated attack.

According to Comer, “The Bidens are in the business of selling Joe Biden.”

In response to the hearing, Rep. Jamie Raskin, the leading Democrat on the committee, pushed back assertively: “Hopefully, today signifies the conclusion of what may be considered one of the most extraordinary failures in the annals of congressional investigations: the endeavor to uncover a high crime or misdemeanor committed by Joe Biden and subsequently impeach him over it.”

When asked to comment on Comer’s letter on Thursday, the White House referred back to earlier statements made by spokesman Ian Sams. Sams has consistently denounced the impeachment proceedings.

Last week, Sams expressed his disappointment with what he referred to as a desperate ploy at the conclusion of a failed impeachment.
