Mocobizscene-On New Year’s Day, 2024 saw the first homicide in Washington, D.C., when Ashlei Hinds, an 18-year-old from Clinton, Maryland, was shot and killed in a hotel room. At approximately 1:20 a.m., police were summoned to the Embassy Suites Hotel in Friendship Heights, where the incident took place.
Police are offering a $25,000 prize for information that leads to an arrest and conviction, but no suspects have been named. There were 272 homicides in the District of Columbia at the end of the previous year, which is a 35% rise from 2022 and the highest number in almost 20 years.
Ward 3 Councilman Matt Frumin of the District of Columbia announced the creation of a public safety forum to discuss the city’s rampant gun violence and criminality.
