Osgood Backs Florida Bills Aiming To ‘deregulate’ Public Education

Mocobizscene- Florida Senator Rosalind Osgood, formerly a member of The School Board of Broward County, expressed her support for bills 7000, 7002, and 7004 to deregulate public education.

The bills received unanimous support from the Florida Senate Fiscal Policy Committee. According to Osgood, this decision will greatly benefit students with special needs who often suffer from the limitations of “one-size-fits-all” policies.

Osgood expressed that many deregulations would empower school districts to take charge of various aspects and implement effective plans to support students.

    • SB 7000 is also known as the Deregulation of Public Schools/Instructional, Administrative, and Support Personnel Bill.
    • SB 7002 is also known as the Deregulation of Public Schools/School District Finance and Budgets, Facilities, and Administration and Oversight.
    • SB 7004 is also known as the Deregulation of Public Schools/Assessment and Accountability, Instruction, and Education Choice.

Former Governor Jeb Bush expressed his disapproval of SB 7004, arguing that it eliminates the necessity for third-grade students to pass an English-language arts test in order to progress to fourth grade. According to Osgood, improving progress monitoring is the key to addressing this issue.

According to Osgood, it is crucial to assess students consistently throughout the year in order for teachers to provide them with the necessary support.

The Florida State Legislature is scheduled to convene on January 9 and adjourn on March 8. In this session, the Republican legislators, elected in the 2022 elections, hold a strong majority, with 28-12 in the Florida State Senate and 85-35 in the Florida State House.
