Ohio Recalls Condiment with Serious Health Risk

A nationwide distribution of a condiment has been recalled due to the risk of a potentially “fatal” infection.

According to a recall notice shared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, AB World Foods US, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall on Friday (July 12) of its Al’Fez Natural Tahini. The reason behind the recall is the potential of salmonella contamination. As a precautionary measure, the company has ceased the distribution of the product while the investigation into the possible contamination is ongoing.

The products that have been impacted were retailed in 5.6-ounce glass jars and were distributed across the country from May 26, 2023, onwards, with a Best Before date of “2024 JL 11” or later, accompanied by the UPC 711464506778. The recall, as per the FDA, pertains only to the specific codes, which can be located at the back of the jar.

“The specific codes being recalled are: Lot Numbers ‘3031’, ‘3080’, ‘3270’, ‘3297’ with corresponding BEST BEFORE: ‘2024 JL 31’; ‘2024 SE 09’; ‘2025 MR 27’; ‘2025 AL 04’.”

According to the FDA website, salmonella has the potential to cause severe and even fatal infections in individuals with weakened immune systems, including young children and the elderly. Common symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, salmonella can lead to more serious illnesses such as arterial infections and endocarditis.
