Jimmy Carter continues to achieve many milestones, and the list keeps expanding.
Late last week, the world celebrated the birthday of the former president and Nobel Peace Prize-winning humanitarian. He continues to hold the record as the longest-lived ex-commander in chief since March 2019.
In February 2023, he started receiving hospice care. To the surprise of his loved ones, he celebrated his 99th birthday in October, according to his grandson Jason Carter.
In the fall, Jason Carter expressed his gratitude for the ample time he and others had the opportunity to spend with him, stating, “It’s truly a blessing for all of us.”
According to the younger Carter, his father’s time in the private sector and his work at The Carter Center have greatly shaped his legacy. He believes that his father’s dedication to spending time with marginalized and impoverished individuals, while also advocating for their rights and democracy, will be the most significant aspect of his father’s lasting impact.
According to his grandson, Jimmy Carter’s time in hospice was also a surprise.
“When the former president managed to receive such care for a whole year, Jason Carter, in an interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, revealed that initially, they believed he only had a few days left,” said Jason Carter.
Jimmy Carter’s love for his late wife, Rosalynn Carter, was a source of strength for him throughout their decades-long marriage. According to Jason Carter, their devotion to each other was one of the driving forces that kept Jimmy going.
According to his grandson, Jimmy Carter’s Christian faith was a significant driving force in his life. He emphasized that this faith story is deeply ingrained in his identity.
In a conversation with the Journal-Constitution, Jason Carter emphasized that the way he is living his life at the moment is an integral part of his lifelong faith journey. He expressed, “He is living this part of his life as part of that same faith journey that he’s been on for his whole life. And we’re all just there along for the ride.”
Jimmy Carter, after dedicating his life to public service, finally stepped back from the limelight last year. Throughout his career, which spanned from serving in the military to becoming a politician and a dedicated philanthropist, Carter tirelessly utilized his time and energy to make a positive impact on the world.
In 2002, when he was awarded the Nobel Prize, the committee acknowledged his tireless dedication to seeking peaceful resolutions to global conflicts, advocating for democracy and human rights, and fostering economic and social progress.
Jimmy Carter, at 78 years old, was far from considering retirement, even with the obstacles he faced, such as his declining health.
“It’s not easy to make it to 95 years old,” he mentioned during an interview with People magazine in Nashville, Tennessee back in 2019. He shared this insight while he and his wife were actively contributing to the construction of over 4,000 homes as part of their work with Habitat for Humanity.
According to Jimmy Carter, Jesus taught the importance of utilizing our talents for the benefit of others. He mentioned that both he and his wife, Rosa, have strived to follow this teaching.
