Mocobizscene- Mayor Eric Adams is not only highlighting a decline in gun crimes and an upswing in jobs, but he is also addressing the escalating assaults on NYPD officers.
Mayor Eric Adams is celebrating his halfway point in office, where he has been able to showcase a decrease in gun crimes and an increase in jobs and tourism. However, there is a growing concern regarding the rising number of assaults on New York City police officers, as reported by CBS News.
In a recent interview, Adams recognized the difficulty, expressing, “There is a growing lack of regard for authority, a belief that the authority of this city does not deserve respect.” Although crime rates have generally decreased, there has been a sharp rise in assaults on police officers, posing a major obstacle for the NYPD.
In the first quarter of 2023, the city experienced a shocking surge of 41% in attacks on police officers, resulting in a total of 4,077 incidents, compared to 2,886 in 2021. These incidents caused injuries across different levels of severity, ranging from minor cuts and bruises to more serious cases involving shootings, stabbings, or broken bones.
Mayor Adams believes that the recent increase in crime is largely due to a small group of individuals who continuously break the law and feel invincible. He emphasizes the importance of everyone coming together to tackle this problem, and he doesn’t just point fingers at lawmakers. He also calls out the apathetic electorate, stating that many people in New York don’t realize the significance of their vote and how it directly affects their daily lives. According to Mayor Adams, the city is at a pivotal moment, and it’s crucial for everyone to understand the connection between who holds office and the impact it has on their overall quality of life.
Adams did not single out any particular lawmakers responsible for what he perceived as legislation detrimental to the police force. However, he did express his frustration with the consequences of recent criminal justice reforms. Michael LiPetri, Chief of Crime Control and Strategies at the NYPD, highlighted that the percentage of individuals arrested for assault who actually serve jail time has decreased significantly from over 20% before the reforms to just 8% now.
According to police officials, this leniency sends a clear message that favors criminals over law enforcement. Patrick Hendry, President of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association (PBA), expressed his concern stating, “The system is sending a message that it favors criminals over cops.”
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams criticized the mayor’s comments, accusing Adams of misrepresenting his bills. Williams went so far as to liken Adams’ statements to “a 5-year-old throwing a temper tantrum.” Despite facing this criticism, Mayor Adams remains committed to addressing the intricate issues surrounding crime reduction and officer safety in the city.
