The Macomb Police officers involved in a shooting that resulted in the death of a 57-year-old man and a 4-year-old will not face charges, according to the determination of the Illinois State’s Attorney Appellate Prosecutor.
In a letter addressed to the McDonough County State’s Attorney on July 8, Special Prosecutor Jonathan H. Barnard reviewed the evidence and concluded that there isn’t any justifiable basis for criminal action or prosecution against any of the officers involved in the unfortunate accident.
In a statement, Macomb Police Chief Jeff Hamer acknowledged the review by the State’s Attorney and stated that the Macomb Police Department will carry on with their internal investigation of the incident.
According to Hamer, the department will conduct an investigation to determine whether the incident was accidental or within the police’s jurisdiction.
The complete Illinois State Police investigation is now available for review by the MPD Command Staff. The community will be updated once the review is completed.
According to MPD, they plan to release the body camera footage of the incident, but only after they have had discussions with the families of the victims.
According to the Macomb Police report on March 17, a domestic violence incident that occurred around 10 p.m. on March 16 in Macomb led to the tragic death of two individuals, including a child.
According to authorities, they were called to the 900 block of N. Charles Street due to an ongoing domestic violence situation.
Upon entering the apartment, officers came across blood in a communal area and could hear cries for assistance from within.
According to the police report, a 36-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times and immediately taken to McDonough District Hospital for medical attention.
Police reports indicate that George and the child were fatally injured by a single shot fired by an officer.
After reviewing the case, McDonough County State’s Attorney Matthew Kwacala sought assistance from the Illinois State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor’s Office. The objective was to ensure that there was no conflict of interest since Kwacala’s office has frequent contact with MPD.
