On Saturday morning, the Leadership Montgomery Torchbearers hosted a ceremony in Montgomery, Alabama dedicating their new Peace Garden to honor the late Montgomery Police Officer Tanisha Pughsley.
In 2014, Tanisha Pughsley earned her degree from ASU and worked as a detective for the Montgomery Police Department for four years. Tragically, in July 2020, her life was cut short when her ex-boyfriend, Brandon Webster, fatally shot her.
According to court records, Webster had been issued a restraining order for domestic violence against Pughsley shortly before she was murdered. The court handed down a life sentence without the possibility of parole to Webster.
According to Kandace Besteder, a member of the Torchbearers group that spearheaded the project, the Peace Garden was built in memory of Pughsley and to bring attention to the issue of domestic violence. The project was sponsored by Leadership Montgomery Torchbearers Class-XV, Project Team-Three.
According to Besteder, the Torchbearer’s project aims to increase awareness about domestic violence, facilitate healing, and pay tribute to Detective Pughsley. The lush greenery in the garden serves as a symbol of optimism, recovery, and comfort for those who have experienced domestic violence and their loved ones.
Sharon Pughsley, the mother of Tanisha Pughsley, expressed her sincere hope and desire that the Peace Garden would honor her daughter’s legacy of love and service, and serve as a symbol of resilience for the entire community to prevent violence, which tragically took her daughter away from them.
Pate Landscaping generously donated all the plants and labor required to create the beautiful garden. You can find this garden at 2625 Lower Wetumpka Road in Montgomery.
