The perpetrators of a carjacking that developed into a homicide in New Orleans have entered pleas of guilty in relation to the event that transpired a year ago. On Monday, November 20, Briniyah Baker, 17, Lenyra Theophile, 16, and Mar’qel Curtis, 16, reached a plea agreement in connection with the theft and subsequent abduction of Linda Frickey, 73, for over a block.
At first charged as adults with second-degree murder, the adolescents were sentenced to life in prison. However, on Monday, they were found guilty of attempted manslaughter. A twenty-year penitentiary term was imposed upon them in accordance with the terms of their agreement.
People reports that another teen, John Honore, 18, was implicated in the incident and has been charged with second-degree murder. November 27 will witness a distinct trial for him. Prosecutors are convinced that Honore was operating a motor vehicle at the time of the March 21, 2022 incident. He entered a not-guilty plea.
Frickey was reportedly leaving her employment at Security Plan Insurance on the day the teenagers attempted to steal her vehicle, according to the police. Regrettably, the 73-year-old remained fastened in the driver’s side seatbelt when the adolescents departed. She was dragged for over a block behind the vehicle prior to having her limb severed. A death toll was immediately reported at the location. Through surveillance footage, authorities were ultimately able to identify the adolescents.
Todd Ecker, a witness at the location, reminisced abhorringly about what transpired on that fateful day.
“I yelled from the exit of my vehicle, ‘Stop, stop! You’re dragging someone!'” He departed in the vehicle. Continue to drag her. Without regard. “Purely indifferent to human beings,” he declared.
On November 20, during their hearing, the adolescents were overcome with remorse for their actions.
“I wish I had the ability to alter the outcome,” stated Curtis. “[Frickey] appeared to be such a pleasant lady.”
“That was not our intention,” Baker further stated. “Peace be with me, and I beseech your forgiveness.”
