According to neighbors and the building’s super, Espinal used to work as a home care aide and was a mother to two adult sons and a 7-year-old girl. She was residing in the first-floor apartment where the tragic incident took place.
According to the people close to her, Espinal had recently entered into a relationship with a man who exhibited controlling behavior. In fact, he went so far as to insist that she delete all traces of her presence on social media platforms.

Superintendent Santos Araujo expressed his sadness over the incident, emphasizing the close-knit community within the building. He described Espinal as a joyful person but noted that the man appeared to be anti-social and peculiar. In his own words, Superintendent Araujo stated, “I never liked the guy. He wasn’t friendly, he was weird.”
According to Araujo, Espinal’s sister reached out to him from the Dominican Republic, expressing concern about Espinal’s inability to get in touch. On that Friday, Espinal had left her daughter at school, and Araujo was asked to check on her.
Araujo expressed his concern to his wife, sharing that something appeared to be amiss. In response, his wife informed him that her son was approaching. As her son approached the windows, he discovered the unfortunate situation. Araujo shared that it was a sorrowful incident, leading them to contact the police.
He added that the couple had only been together for a few months. He also mentioned that the woman, who used to be a very happy person and enjoyed playing karaoke in her apartment, was not the same anymore.
According to the super, Espinal’s popularity took a significant turn after she met her boyfriend. The change was noticeable, as she stopped indulging in her usual passion for music in December.
Candles burned near the victim’s apartment on Saturday as a small memorial was set up in remembrance.
