The Mississippi Public Service Commission (PSC) has given the green light to a new area code to be assigned to the same region currently using the 662 code. This decision was made on June 13th.
In just a few years, the 662 area code will run out of numbering resources, as forecasted by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA). As a result, a new area code, 471, has been introduced to accommodate the growing demand for phone numbers.
Once the 471 area code becomes operational, new customers or those requesting additional lines may be assigned this code, while the existing 662 customers will retain their current telephone numbers as they are.
Local calls will still require customers to utilize 10-digit dialing, which includes the area code followed by the seven-digit phone number.
All counties in the Public Service Commission Northern District will be covered by the 471 area code.
