The family of Charles Lee pleaded with the man who took his life five years ago on a French Quarter block to ensure that his death carries some significance, any significance at all.
In court, White expressed his apology to Lee’s family members and acknowledged that his life had spiraled out of control before the tragic incident. He shared that he had a positive upbringing, being raised by his grandparents who followed the Jehovah’s Witnesses faith.
“I have come to terms with the possibility that I may never be released,” he replied to Felecia Lee. “However, if the day comes when I am set free, I will utilize my entire journey, including all the events that have unfolded, and channel it towards a noble cause.”
Derbes rejected White’s apology, describing him as a “fraudster” with a “highly intelligent mind.” Judge Goode-Douglas expressed her belief that White’s intelligence and upbringing should have prevented him from being in the situation he found himself in.
