Liz Cheney accuses current House Speaker Mike Johnson of being complicit in Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election

MBS – Liz Cheney said that now-Speaker Mike Johnson was a “collaborator” in Trump’s push to overturn the 2020 election.

The ex-GOP lawmaker, who left office earlier this year, made the remarks on “CBS Sunday Morning.”

“Mike was willing time and again to ignore the rulings of the courts,” she told CBS News.

In a recent interview, former Rep. Liz Cheney labeled now-House Speaker Mike Johnson as a “collaborator” in President Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

In a recent conversation with CBS News correspondent John Dickerson on “CBS Sunday Morning,” Cheney expressed her belief that the Louisiana Republican’s support of Trump’s claims about the 2020 election and his efforts to oppose the certification of President Joe Biden’s wins in Arizona and Pennsylvania indicated his unwavering commitment to assisting Trump.

According to the former Wyoming congresswoman, Donald Trump cannot achieve his goals on his own. He relies on collaborators, and Mike Johnson’s story exemplifies this collaboration.

Johnson, elected to the House in 2016 and assuming the role of speaker in October 2023 following the removal of Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, played a crucial role in the GOP congressional effort supporting a Texas lawsuit seeking to overturn the results in four pivotal swing states. (The US Supreme Court ultimately rejected the lawsuit.)

During the CBS interview, Cheney provided further insight into her relationship with Johnson.

“We used to be good friends,” the former House Republican Conference chairwoman revealed. “However, I later discovered that his actions were actually quite risky.”

“It was a dangerous situation because Mike knowingly took actions that were morally and legally wrong, disregarding the facts, the law, and even the Constitution,” she explained. “Time and time again, Mike was willing to defy court rulings and dismiss the decisions made by both state and federal courts regarding the elections in these states, all in an attempt to fulfill Donald Trump’s desires.”

In a statement to CBS News, Johnson’s office refuted Cheney’s remarks about the 2020 presidential election.

In a statement, it was mentioned that Ms. Cheney’s new book does not provide an accurate portrayal of the events. The statement further expressed that Speaker Johnson has no intention of buying a copy of ‘Oath and Honor.’ However, he did extend his best wishes to former Rep. Cheney and her family for their future endeavors.

Liz Cheney, a former vice chair of the House January 6 committee, has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of Donald Trump within the Republican Party. Despite losing the Wyoming Republican primary to now-Rep. Harriet Hageman, Cheney has remained steadfast in her condemnation of Trump’s actions leading up to and during the Capitol riot. In fact, she was one of only 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump in January 2021 for his role in inciting the insurrection.
