Mocobizscene- Five individuals, namely Koran Jackson, Reginald Steele, Tyiion Kyree Freeman, Stephen Nelson, and Aaron Dequan Brown, have been accused of multiple charges. These charges include conspiracy, assault with the intent to kill while armed, first-degree murder while armed, carrying a pistol without a license, and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.
These charges are in relation to the tragic shooting that resulted in the death of 13-year-old Malachi Lukes on March 1, 2020, on the 600 block of S Street, NW. Additionally, a seven-year-old boy was also injured by gunshot wounds during the incident.
During the trial, the defense attorney, Megan Allburn, questioned a witness from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) who had responded to a 911 call regarding a seven-year-old who had been shot. The witness recounted his encounter with the child’s mother.
In another video, the spotlight is on a hallway where Lukes, who had also sustained a gunshot wound, was found. The detective revealed that, during their presence at the scene, MPD had no leads regarding potential suspects.
During cross-examination, Allburn questioned the detective about the absence of video surveillance footage from the building where the incident occurred. In response, the detective confirmed that no such footage had been collected.
The prosecution argued that these photos are “not unfairly prejudicial because, ultimately, this is the reality we are facing.”
Judge Brandt has yet to make her final ruling on the motion. However, she acknowledged that homicides, by their very nature, are not pleasant. She also stated that the bias surrounding the photos is not more significant than their evidentiary value.
The lead detective on the case, a member of MPD’s Special Victims Unit, was called by the prosecution to testify. According to the detective, the investigation was quite complex due to several factors. Firstly, it took place during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, which added an additional layer of difficulty.
Secondly, there were only a few witnesses available, making it challenging to gather sufficient evidence. Additionally, there was a significant amount of surveillance video footage that needed to be thoroughly reviewed. Lastly, the detective had to compare the GPS data from the suspects’ car with the video footage.
The lead detective provided additional testimony, stating that a fellow police officer positively identified Steele based on a still image extracted from one of the surveillance videos. However, the detective did not provide any details regarding how the officer came to recognize Steele. Following this identification, a search warrant was obtained for Steele’s phone, as the lead detective believed it could potentially contain valuable evidence related to the shooting incident.
The parties are scheduled to resume on January 29th.
