Mocobizscene-The Leesburg Police Department is currently awaiting the extradition of a Maryland couple back to Virginia. The couple will be facing felony charges in relation to a shoplifting incident that took place last year.
On Friday, October 27, LPD officers received a dispatch to the Ulta located on Village Market Blvd. According to the department, it was reported that a man and woman entered the store around 3 p.m. and stole merchandise worth over $6,400.
The Laurel Police Department (LPD) initiated an investigation and successfully identified the suspects involved. Roxana Dumitru, a 29-year-old resident of Laurel, MD, and Ionut-Robert Ionescu, a 30-year-old resident of the same city, were determined to be the individuals responsible.
All of them face charges of grand larceny and larceny with the intent to sell.
LPD estimates that this couple is responsible for organized retail theft amounting to over $158,000 from various retail stores in Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina.
In collaboration with federal partners, LPD successfully located the whereabouts of the couple. Dumitru was apprehended in Prince George’s County, MD, while Ionescu was arrested in Orange County, CA. Currently, both individuals are being held in custody, awaiting extradition.
Leesburg Police Chief Thea Pirnat stressed the importance of acknowledging that organized retail theft is far from a victimless crime. She emphasized that each stolen item not only results in losses for businesses, but also negatively affects the livelihoods of diligent individuals and poses a threat to the overall economic well-being of the community.
