John Eastman, the former attorney for President Trump, responded to a California judge’s call for his disbarment by expressing confidence in his appeal and revealing that he has been subpoenaed in a separate lawsuit connected to the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. Despite the judge’s ruling, Eastman remains optimistic about his chances on appeal and is actively involved in legal matters related to the events of that day.
The judge has recommended that Eastman, who played a central role in the efforts to overturn the 2020 election, be disbarred. This recommendation is based on his making “false and misleading statements” regarding alleged election fraud and his involvement in “provoking” the Jan. 6 insurrection.
During an interview on the conservative network Frank Speech, Eastman expressed his belief that there is still much to be resolved before his case is heard by the state Supreme Court.
“He stated that if the law had been followed diligently, this case would have never been initiated in the first place.”
According to Eastman, there was a disagreement regarding the facts of the 2020 election and the constitutional interpretation on unresolved issues. He emphasized that such disagreements have never been the grounds for disciplinary action.
Judge Yvette Roland of the State Bar found Eastman responsible for 10 out of the 11 charges against him.
The court has concluded that, considering the circumstances surrounding Eastman’s misconduct and carefully weighing the aggravating and mitigating factors, disbarment is the recommended course of action. This decision, outlined in a comprehensive 128-page document, signifies the seriousness of Eastman’s actions.
While his case is being appealed, Eastman has been suspended from practicing law in California.
During the interview on Thursday, he expressed his belief that the disbarment is primarily driven by political motives, with the intention of undermining our adversarial system of justice.
As part of a civil suit brought by a group of Capitol Police officers against Trump, he mentioned that he has been subpoenaed. The officers are holding Trump accountable for the events of January 6th, and they aim to seek financial penalties for the violence they endured during the riots.
Last week, the Capitol Police officers served us with a subpoena, demanding access to all our communications with the president and any other individuals,” he revealed. According to him, they have disregarded the notion of attorney-client privilege entirely.
Eastman continues to play a significant role in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s criminal case against Trump in connection with the Capitol attack. He strongly criticizes the prosecution, aligning himself with Trump’s own objections and arguing that it is politically motivated.
“We seem to have lost sight of the importance of seeking the truth in criminal matters. Instead, our focus has shifted to playing politics and targeting our opponents,” he expressed. “It appears that anything they believe will further their agenda against Trump takes precedence.”
“That’s just how the game works,” he went on to say. “By keeping us tied up, using our resources to defend against these things, it means that we can’t use those resources and talent to focus on important issues that will benefit those who are rational and truly want to steer our country in the right direction.”
