Jeff Bridges to Reprise Role in ‘Tron: Ares,’ Admits De-Aged Character in ‘Tron: Legacy’ Resembled Bill Maher Instead of Himself

Jeff Bridges is returning to the grid.

Cindy Morgan, the beloved star of ‘Tron’ and ‘Caddyshack’, has sadly passed away at the age of 69.

In a recent interview with the Film Comment podcast, the 74-year-old actor revealed that he will be making an appearance in “Tron: Ares,” the third installment of the popular sci-fi franchise. It was Bridges who first introduced audiences to the world of “Tron” in 1982 and reprised his role in “Tron: Legacy” in 2010. The upcoming film, directed by Joachim Rønning and starring Jared Leto as the protagonist Ares, will feature a script by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne.

Jeff Bridges announced that he will be participating in the upcoming third installment of the ‘Tron’ franchise. The actor expressed his excitement to work with Jared Leto, who will be the star of the film, and shared his admiration for Leto’s previous work. According to a representative for Bridges, the actor had already completed his work on ‘Tron: Ares’ at the time of the podcast recording.

The film “Tron” is renowned for its groundbreaking use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) to bring the digital world of a video game to life. In the movie, Kevin Flynn, played by Bridges, gets transported into this virtual realm. In the sequel, Flynn finds himself trapped within an even more advanced version of the game, created by his digital doppelganger, Clu. Bridges also portrayed Clu, with the help of CGI technology that digitally de-aged him.

“I wasn’t fond of my appearance in it,” Bridges expressed. “I felt as though I resembled Bill Maher more than my true self. It was quite peculiar.”

Jeff Bridges mentioned that he had heard about the reduced use of AI elements in the upcoming film “Tron: Ares.” He also mentioned that the production is focusing more on practical sets for this project. Bridges expressed excitement about the beautiful sets he had seen and eagerly awaits the final outcome.

Jodie Turner-Smith has officially joined the cast of “Tron: Ares” alongside Jared Leto, Evan Peters, and Greta Lee. This exclusive news brings excitement to fans as the star-studded line-up continues to grow for the highly anticipated film.

The actor did not reveal any additional information about his character in “Tron: Ares,” and it is uncertain if he will be reprising his role as Kevin Flynn. In the conclusion of “Tron: Legacy,” Flynn absorbs Clu and removes them both from the virtual world, enabling his son, Sam (Garrett Hedlund), and Quorra (Olivia Wilde), a conscious digital being, to return to the real world.

Hedlund and Wilde, on the other hand, will not be joining the cast of “Tron: Ares.” The film will instead center around Leto’s character, a digital program who ventures into the human world. Joining Leto in the cast are Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Gillian Anderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins.

Leto initially joined the project in 2017 as both a star and producer. However, it gained momentum in January 2023 when Rønning came on board to direct. Alongside Leto, Justin Springer, Jeffrey Silver, and Emma Ludbrook are also serving as producers.
