Indiana girl, 7, dies in Florida beach sand trap

Mocobizscene- Authorities said that a 7-year-old girl from Indiana passed away and her 9-year-old brother was taken to the hospital when the sand hole they were excavating on a beach in Florida fell on top of them.

At a Lauderdale-by-the-Sea beach, Sloan and Maddox Mattingly were having fun when they got stuck in the sand, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Along for the trip were their parents.

At 3:16 p.m. on Tuesday, a call regarding the event was answered by many organizations. NBC South Florida was able to capture cellphone footage of other beachgoers attempting to release the kids with their hands.
Sandra King, a representative with Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, told the TV station that rescuers utilized shovels to extract the twins from the about five-foot-deep hole and support boards to keep the sand from falling any farther.

How long the kids were stranded before being freed is unknown. There are no lifeguards on duty at the beach, according to town hall staff.

After being brought to the hospital, both kids passed away there. According to West Palm Beach, Florida’s NBC station WPTV, Maddox is stable.

After learning that two youngsters were stuck in the sand, the Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea posted a message on Facebook saying, “Our hearts are heavy in LBTS today.”

The American Lifeguard Association issued a warning regarding the risks associated with sand holes in response to the event. Additionally, the group stated that it is in favor of more beach patrols in regions where sand digging is common and asked that beach patrols improve their emergency response protocols.
